Sarah Burlingame is a permablogger at Feminist Mormon Housewives. She meets with LDS ecclesiastical leaders regularly as a faith organiser and advocates for LGBTQ belonging in Mormon congregations.
She speaks really good Mormon having presented at Sunstone, and generally makes a solid contribution to progressive Mormonism; except she’s not a Mormon. A cradle Bahai, and a Unitarian Universalist by choice she has no intention of ever becoming a Mormon because among other things she’s an atheist.
Sara Burlingame joins me to discuss her love for, and involvement in a faith tradition that she will likely never adopt as her own.
Thank you Sara. Not only for the interview, but your efforts to make things better within the church. I guess the threat of excommunicating you just brings a chuckle to you since you are not even a member. Does your ability to speak Mormon make you officially “bilingual”.
Thanks, a Happy Hubby! I will apply for scholarships as a secular/Mormon bilingualist and let you know how that goes. I don’t know if I can claim total fluency yet, Just the other night at a Mormon gathering in Laramie someone pointed out a term that I should drop because it carried negative connotations in Mormon dialogue- so I am still learning!
